Rod Laver Arena was completed in 1988 as part of Melbourne Park. The 15,000 seat arena was well known world-wide from the day it was built as a high-tech venue due to its retractable roof. The roof can be closed in 15-20 minutes. Rod Laver Arena plays host to Australian Open Tennis, Basketball, Concerts, Conventions, and has also held several motocross events. Previously known as simply Centre Court at the National Tennis Centre, from January 2000 this arena was named after Rod Laver in recognition of the achievements one of Australia's greatest sporting champions.
